McFarlane to Expand Spawn Universe

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has announced a raft of new series that will enlarge the universe of the long-running franchise, which is published by Image Comics.  All will spin out of Spawn #350 and the expansion will be dubbed “the New U.”  Cover prices will be $2.99 or $3.99, as is the case for most other Spawn single-issue comics.

The first series, Sam & Twitch: Case Files, will feature the eponymous New York detectives, who first appeared in Spawn#1, solving murders in a noir-inflected atmosphere.  The stories, written by McFarlane and co-plotted by Jon Goff, with art by Szymon Kudrański, will be episodic and reminiscent of R-rated true-crime dramas.  The first issue will be released on March 27, 2024, with cover A by Kevin Keane and cover B by McFarlane; the cover price will be $2.99.

Rat City, by writer Erica Schultz and artist Zé Carlos, is set in the future and features former soldier Peter Cairn, an amputee whose prosthetic legs contain nanites that were affected by Al Simmons’ actions in the present, turning him into a Hellspawn.  The extra-long first issue will be available on April 10 with a cover by Carlos and an MSRP of $3.99.

Monolith, by Sean Lewis and Valerio Giangiordano, is a three-issue miniseries that focuses on the origin story of the massive red Hellspawn.  The first issue will be released on May 15 with a cover by Giangiordano and a cover price of $2.99.

McFarlane plans to roll out a number of other miniseries and ongoing series throughout 2024.  Three four-issue miniseries, Misery, Medieval Spawn, and Spawn Kills Every Spawn, will launch in June and July.  August will see the launch of Violator, an oversized six-issue limited series focusing on that character, and Knights vs. Samurai, written by actor and writer David Dastmalchian.  That will be followed by Deadly Tales, a new ongoing series, in September, and No Home Here, which will have an extended page count and a bimonthly release schedule, in October.  And four more series are in the works as well: Focus, Spawn: The Dark Ages, She-Spawn, Bloodletter, and Spawn 77.

McFarlane launched his multi-character Spawn universe in 2021 (see “Todd McFarlane Plans Comic Universe Built Around Spawn”).
