Peanuts Pop-Up Book, Dark Anansi, More Bendis

AbramsComicArts has announced its spring catalog, which includes both new titles and second volumes of recently launched series. The first one on the list was announced last fall: Nate Powell’s Fall Through, a time-loop story about a punk band that will go on sale on February 6 (see “Nate Powell Blends Punk Rock and Time Travel”).

Here’s what else Abrams has lined up for spring:

Here Comes Charlie Brown! A Peanuts Pop-Up is a 12-page, palm-sized book that turns Charles Schulz’s very first Peanuts strip into an interactive experience. Designed by Chip Kidd, with commentary by comics historian Gene Kannenberg Jr., the pint-sized hardcover will go on sale on March 26 with an MSRP of $16.99.

Phenomena Book 2: Matilde’s Quest, by Brian Michael Bendis and André Lima Araújo, is the second book in the fantasy trilogy that launched in 2022 (see “Bendis Signs Three-Book Deal with Abrams”). The story centers on a boy, a girl, and a warrior who are wandering the earth after some sort of “phenomena” that changed the world into a fantastical place. In the second volume, they learn that their adventures have become legendary, which brings both fame and danger. The 144-page hardcover, with black and white interiors, is rated 13+ and will be released on April 23 with an MSRP of $24.99.

Devour, by Jazmine Joyner and Anthony Pugh, brings the West African legend of Anansi the Spider into the modern American South with the story of a family whose matriarch is the last of a line of root workers, women who use roots and herbs to heal illnesses and remove spells. Patsy, the oldest daughter, begins to explore the home and discovers that Anansi was captured by her ancestors and now lives in the home, and that her grandmother’s dementia is caused by Anansi eating her traumatic memories. Patsy must now take on the burden and the power of her family’s legacy in this dark fable. The 208-page hardcover has a May 7 release date and an MSRP of $24.99.

Joyner is an editor at IDW Publishing and a former editor of Abrams’ Megascope and Surely Books imprints as well as a former member of the retailer group The Valkyries (see “IDW New Editorial Hires”).

Grand Slam Romance Book 2: Major League Hotties, by Ollie Hicks and Emma Oosterhous, is the second volume in a series about magical-girl softball players. This volume takes two of the teammates to Berlin, where they have to get their magical girl licenses in order to remain in good standing, and that requires not only more softball but also a season with a team that is not entirely sympathetic to their cause, and whose has an unhappy romantic history with both of them. The 256-page hardcover, part of Abrams’ Surely Books imprint (see “Abrams Announces LBGTQIA Line”), will go on sale on May 14 with an MSRP of $24.99.
