Niantic is continuing to announce new events and content for Pokémon GO. Read on below to learn more:
The Rainbow Pokémon takes over five-star Shadow Raids during this weekend-long event.
Team GO Rocket is taking over once again! A slew of Pokémon are appearing in Shadow Raids, but perhaps none more blazingly bold than the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh. Shadow Raid Weekend: Ho-Oh takes place starting January 27, 2024, at 6:00 a.m. to January 28, 2024, at 10:00 p.m. local time. During this time, Shadow Ho-Oh will appear in five-star Shadow Raids, and—for the first time in Pokémon GO—lucky Trainers might even encounter a Shiny one!
Shadow Raids are different than other raids and a whole lot tougher. Trainers must gather in person to challenge these exceptionally powerful Pokémon, so get ready to rally your local community to take down the Rainbow Pokémon this weekend. If you’ve been collecting Purified Gems during the Taken Treasures event, you’ll want to use them to lower the Attack and Defense of Shadow Ho-Oh when it becomes enraged. Trainers battling in the raid can use as many Purified Gems as they want—the effects will stack, offering everyone a significant advantage!
If you’re not sure how to take down Shadow Ho-Oh, look no further than our Ho-Oh Pokémon GO Raid Battle Tips article. You’ll find a list of Pokémon that can go toe-to-toe with the Rainbow Pokémon as well as an overview of Ho-Oh’s strengths in Pokémon GO.
Shine through the shadows, Trainers!

A new Team GO Rocket takeover features Shadow Pokémon galore.
Team GO Rocket is at it again, unleashing a plethora of powerful Shadow Pokémon—including Shadow Kyogre and Shadow Ho-Oh! The Pokémon GO Taken Treasures event runs January 27, 2024, at 12:00 a.m. to February 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. local time. During this time, Varoom is wheeling into the spotlight for the first time in Pokémon GO. Also, Team GO Rocket will appear more frequently at PokéStops and in balloons, and Trainers can use a Charged TM to help Shadow Pokémon forget the Charged Attack Frustration. These windows of opportunity are few and far between, so take advantage of this rare chance to teach your Shadow Pokémon a different Charged Attack.
Adding to the drama, Giovanni returns, now battling with an immensely powerful Shadow Kyogre at his side. Trainers that complete the final phase of the Seasonal Special Research story will receive a Super Rocket Radar to chase down Giovanni and battle Shadow Kyogre. The Seasonal Special Research story must be claimed by March 1, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. local time.
