Scholastic has announced a new graphic adaptation in its Graphix line: Whatever After, Sarah Mlynowski’s New York Times best-selling chapter book series about two siblings who are transported into the world of different fairy tales via a magic mirror and end up changing the stories. In the first volume, Fairest of All, Abby and her younger brother Jonah save Snow White from her cursed sleep by stopping her from eating the poison apple, but that raises the problem of how she will meet the prince, or whether she even wants to meet the prince. The artist for Fairest of All is Anu Chouhan, who was also the artist for Aru Shah and the End of Time, part of the Rick Riordan Presents line. Whatever After #1: Fairest of All, rated for ages 8-12, will be published on April 2, 2024, as a hardcover with an MSRP of $24.99 and a paperback with an MSRP of $12.99. The publisher plans a national marketing campaign that will include consumer advertising, outreach at library and educator conferences, and promotion on the dedicated Whatever After website.
Scholastic has had considerable success with its adaptations of the prose properties The Baby-Sitters Club, Wings of Fire, and I Survived…, all of which have been consistent best-sellers (see “Top Kids Graphic Novel Franchises – Spring 2023”).
