One of the hottest properties at AnimeNYC this past weekend was The Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, with fans lining up for autographs and filling a panel room to see a live drawing demo by artist Sleepy-C. Yen is publishing the webtoon under its Ize Press manhwa imprint (see “Yen Press Adds Four Webtoons”), and Yen Press staffers told ICv2 that the 200 copies of the first volume they brought to the show were all gone by the end of the first day. The book will be officially released on December 12, 2023.
On the Webtoon platform, where it runs under the title Omniscient Reader, the webtoon has 3 million followers and has racked up over 284 million views. Interest is high on social media as well: Ize’s Tweet announcing the manhwa and novel had over 1 million views and 11,000 retweets, both records for the publisher. The story follows an office worker, Dokja, whose favorite web novel, Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse, suddenly becomes reality. Since he has read the book, Dokja knows how the world will end and has to do what he can to stop that from happening. The webtoon won a manhwa award in the 2021 Korean Content Awards. Yahoo! Entertainment reports that it is being adapted into a live-action movie, and Jisoo, a member of the top Korean girl group BLACKPINK, has been offered the starring role. Filming will begin in December 2023.
The Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint is an adaptation of a web novel by the husband-and-wife writing team singNsong, who also wrote The World After the Fall, another webtoon that is now published by Ize Press.
