Amazon announced Tuesday, through emails to affected customers, that they will be merging the comiXology and Kindle applications on iOS, Android, and Fire OS on December 4, 2023.
Any books purchased on comiXology will be automatically visible in the user’s Kindle library. Amazon also mentioned enhancements they have made to the Kindle app “to deliver the great digital comics, graphic novels, and manga experience you’re accustomed to in the comiXology app”:
- The Kindle library now groups issues, volumes, and omnibuses from the same series.
- The user can hide and unhide specific comics, graphic novels, and manga.
- The in-app filter menu has a “Comics & Manga” item.
- Members of ComiXology Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited, or Amazon Prime can borrow comics, graphic novels, and manga titles directly in the application.
The comiXology URL will still be active for digital comic purchases.
Amazon acquired comiXology in 2014 (see “Amazon Acquiring ComiXology“), and began shutting down the company with a round of massive layoffs early this year (see “Bloodbath at ComiXology”).
In 2022, comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger left the company in 2022 (see “Steinberger Out and Up at Amazon”). He has since co-founded the publisher DSTLRY with former comiXology executive Chip Mosher (see “Former ComiXology Execs to New Publisher, DSTLRY”).
