For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is deeply honored to feature the art of the extraordinary Denisiwii. This talented artist and admirable person was also a part of the incredible project of Ilustradoras Unidas titled Pokedex Ilustrada.
For this brilliant illustrator, Art has meant a way to improve her social skills.
“I’ve always been antisocial, and that caused me problems fitting in with groups or in certain places,” she explained. “Drawing has been a lifesaver for me. Thanks to my illustrations, I have found people and groups in which I can express myself and talk freely. These art communities have opened more doors to friendly and personal conversations. Art has made the experience of living more pleasant and fulfilling.”
To put it simply, the story of Denisiwii with Pokémon is beautiful and profoundly touching.
“The Pokémon franchise holds great significance in my life for two reasons. Firstly, it has marked me since my childhood. Playing with Pogs, cards, albums, and video games sparked my desire to draw these creatures and depict their attacks and environments in my own way. Consequently, people approached me to watch how I drew, and I could create connections. Also, I began to interact with more trainers when I started playing online.”
“Secondly, and most importantly, it’s because of my daughter. Pokémon has had a profound impact on my daughter’s life. Although this is a deeply personal matter, I am happy to share it. My little girl was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and it was through watching the Pokémon anime and playing the games that she began to develop her ability to communicate and express herself in various ways. In the present day, I find myself drawing Pokémon even more frequently because she wishes to have her bedroom adorned with illustrations from the franchise. We also acquire artwork from other talented artists, and she dreams of becoming an Eevee trainer. And life has become very happy with this shared love of Pokémon.”
Having the opportunity to create Pokémon-inspired artwork brings immense joy to Denisiwii.
“I think that few (people) in the world have the opportunity to combine two things they love and create with them. So, I consider myself lucky to be able to make it a reality. I enjoy drawing them in digital (form), but I believe the best of me is born when I traditionally draw a Pokémon. (Because) in those moments, I connect with my happiest thoughts and emotions, although there is also a hint of anxiety in wanting to see the illustration finished.”
Choosing a favorite Pokémon is very complicated for our featured artist because she doesn’t remember any Pokémon that she doesn’t like.
“I was obsessed with water-type Pokémon for a while. But after asking myself the question many times in my head and thinking about it carefully, I think my favorite is Ampharos. Although, I like its Japanese name better: Denryu (it sounds more imposing). I think it’s a very warm-hearted Pokémon that gives help and guidance in dark and stormy paths. The light emitted from the sphere of its tail is a signal (for us) to not get lost in anything and gives (us) the feeling of security. Those things make it my favorite,” she concluded.
