Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King and Eisner-nominated artist Peter Gross are working together on a new series, Animal Pound, that puts a contemporary spin on George Orwell’s allegorical novel Animal Farm. The creative team also includes colorist Tamra Bonvillain and letterer Clayton Cowles, who are both also Eisner nominees. The first issue will be released on December 20, 2023, with a main cover by Gross and variants by Yuko Shimizu, Gabriel H. Walta, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Skottie Young, among others. An ashcan will be released to comic shops on November 15.
The premise of the new series is that the animals have taken control of their pound, but that proves to be more complicated than expected, as they have to shift from uniting against a common enemy to constructing a new society.
“Animal Pound is the most ambitious story I’ve ever told, and I feel like a fool for trying to do it,” King said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “But the story came to me strong, and with Peter drawing, I know we’ll pull it off; we’ll make something as insane, stunning, and frightful as the times we live in.”
