Major shake-ups are going down in Hollywood this week, and it’s time for a round-up!
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, former star of The Nanny, declared that the National Board convened on July 13, 2023 to authorize a strike of the Producers–SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Contracts of 2014, which took effect on July 14, 2023. SAG-AFTRA’s primary reasons for striking were over unfair compensation for performers as well as concerns over Hollywood’s use of AI to attempt to replace talent. With the WGA strike ongoing and shutting down major productions (see “‘Spider-Man 4’ Paused“), a prolonged double strike will cause further delay for on-going movie and TV productions as well as eliminate summer convention appearances for actors and writers.
Warner Bros. Pictures revealed the final trailer for Blue Beetle (see below). The Blue Beetle stars Cobra Kai’s Xolo Mariduena and will hit theaters on August 18, 2023 (see “’Blue Beetle’ News“).
TOHO Co. Ltd. launched a monstrous teaser for Godzilla Minus One (see below). This movie features Godzilla attacking an already devastated Japanese landscape, post-World War II. It will hit theaters on December 1, 2023 (see “Best in Shows — 2023“).
Disney+ released a new trailer for Star Wars: Ahsoka (see below). This series will kick off on August 23, 2023 with a two-episode premiere (see “Ahsoka“).
Superman Legacy added new cast members, according to Vanity Fair. DC Studios has cast Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Recently, David Corenswet was cast Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan was named co-star as Lois Lane (see “‘Superman: Legacy’“).
Hulu launched Animayhem, a new adult animation sub-brand. This sub-brand will feature popular adult animation shows like Archer, Family Guy, and Bob Burgers. Hulu had already been deeply entwined with adult animation, as their original Solar Opposites series is now in S4 (see “Justin Roiland Replaced“) and brought Futurama back to TV with new episodes (see “‘Futurama’ Returns“).
