Skybound Kicks Off ‘Universal Monsters’ License with Dracula Miniseries by James Tynion IV & Martin Simmonds

Skybound Entertainment is partnering with Universal Products & Experiences to produce comics based on the movie studio’s classic movie monsters, and the first project will be Universal Monsters: Dracula, by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds. The four-issue miniseries, which will feature a number of characters from the original 1931 film, will launch on October 25, 2023, with a main cover by Simmonds and a variant cover by Joshua Middleton.

The miniseries is the first of several planned limited series featuring the Universal Monsters; while Skybound did not announce any other titles or creators, they did say that the comics will have variant covers by artists including Joshua Middleton, Francis Manapul, Julian Totino-Tedesco, and Jenny Frison.

The Universal Monsters are iconic characters that appeared in Universal’s horror films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Dark Horse did a series of comics based on individual characters in the 1990s and collected them in a trade paperback in 2006 with an introduction and cover by Eric Powell. Dark Horse also published novels based on the Universal Monsters (see “Universal Monsters Novels from DH Press”).

Tynion IV and Simmonds are also the creative team for The Department of Truth (see “‘Department of Truth’ Sells Out with Over 100,000 Orders”), which has been nominated for a 2023 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series.
