There’s a greater variety of new titles on the chart of the Top 20 Adult graphic novels in the book channel, based on Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan data for April (4/2/23-4/29/23) provided to ICv2.
There are 15 different series on the April chart, a far cry from January, when 10 of the 20 slots were taken up by Chainsaw Man and an 11th by another book by the same creator (see “January 2023 NPD BookScan“). In fact, there is only one volume of Chainsaw Man on the April chart, and like most of the other handful of backlist titles, it’s Volume 1.
This chart demonstrates a very different dynamic from the anime-driven charts of months past, when fans were scooping up multiple volumes of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba or Spy x Family. Instead, we are seeing the most recent volume of a wide variety of series make the Top 20, with the venerable One Piece leading the pack. Some books pop up that haven’t been on the chart for a while, such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Others, such as Blue Lock and Dandadan, are relatively new. The one thing that all the manga has in common is that it is solidly in the shonen/seinen demographic.
Still on the chart: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. Now there’s a book with legs.

Circana covers approximately 85% of the U.S. trade print book market. The ranks on this chart are based on piece sales. Some publishers classify titles that are primarily text, or art books, as graphic novels; we’ve removed those titles from the ranking above.
