Hollywood news keeps on keeping on, and it’s time for another round-up!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has set a record for box office numbers for video game adaptations, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Universal and Illumination film has passed $508 million in ticket sales worldwide, beating out the both the box office hauls of Warcraft ($439.4 million) and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu ($449.8 million). The film also set a new record for the second weekend of an animated feature with its $87 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to Deadline. The total worldwide ross is now at $678 million since release. Super Mario had already set a record for five-day U.S./Canada box office record at $204.6 million (see “‘Super Mario Bros.’ Sets Record“), and has knocked off Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as 2023’s biggest earner thus far.
Marvel Entertainment dropped a new teaser trailer for The Marvels (see below). The new teaser trailer shows Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and Carol Danvers teaming to battle Skrulls in space. This movie hits theaters on November 10, 2023 (see “Best in Shows — 2023“).
Peacock has released a teaser for The Continental: From the World of John Wick (see below), a new three-part series that will drop on the streamer in September. The miniseries is an origin story for the hotel-for-assassins that’s the centerpiece of the John Wick universe, set in the hellscape of 1970s New York City.
HBO Max will be re-launching itself as the Max streaming service on May 23, 2023. The new service will include HBO Max streaming as well as programming from Discovery+. Max’s tiers include $15.99 a month ($149.99/year) for an ad-free version, and $9.99 per month ($99.99/year) for the ad-supported one. There will be a third ad-free version of the service with 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, and Dolby Atmos sound for $19.99 a month ($199.99/year).
Max released a new featurette for The Penguin series (see below). The new featurette takes on a very Sopranos tone, as it shows The Penguin going about his business as a rising crime lord in Gotham city. The Penguin stars Colin Farrell, Michael Zegan, James Madio, Scott Cohen, and Clancy Brown as Gotham crime boss Salvatore Maroni (see “Clancy Brown Added to ‘The Penguin’“).
Netflix has greenlit an untitled animated series to take place in the Stranger Things world, according to Deadline. The new series will be developed by Flying Bark Productions with Eric Robles as the executive producer. Stranger Things, the hit TV series by the Duffer brothers, will be ending with its Season 5 (see “‘Stranger Things’ End“).
