Osprey Games has announced General Orders: World War II, a worker-placement style wargame by David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin, the creators of the Undaunted series. Osprey will premier the game at Gen Con and Essen’s Spiel fair prior to its release in October.
General Orders: World War II puts players in command of battlefield forces from the Axis or Allied powers in two very different battlefields: the Italian mountains and Pacific islands. Assigning their forces to strategic assets can allow a commander to take advantage of that asset’s special ability or block their opponent from using it. At the same time, the commanders must take care to protect their supply lines, defend against airstrikes and artillery attacks, and defend their headquarters.
The game is intended for 2 players, ages 14 and up, and plays in about 40 minutes. General Orders: World War II comes with 1 game board, 30 cards, over 80 wooden pieces, dice, and tokens. Illustrated by Alex Green. MSRP is $35.00.
In a press release from the company, the designers explained their intent with the game, saying “We’re extremely excited about General Orders. It’s a game where we really wanted to do something completely new – to leverage the ideas and concepts in worker placement games to drive the action in a war-themed game. The end result is something we’re very proud of, a tight, tense, quick-playing hybrid game that fuses different genres into something fresh and exciting.”
Osprey has announced a number of tabletop miniatures games (see “More Tabletop Warfare Coming from Osprey”) and roleplaying games (see “Osprey Plans Four RPG Books for 2023”) to release later this year.
