Screenwriter, producer, and comics scribe Marc Guggenheim will write a new five-issue limited series, Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes, to be published by IDW starting in May. Oleg Chudakov will be the artist for the series, and DC Alonso will be the colorist. The story takes place right after the events of the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture and features the crew of the Enterprise going up against foes who are their own doubles. The first issue will have covers by Jake Bartok and Chudakov and retailer incentive variants by Luke Sparrow and Rod Reis.
“Despite watching the occasional fragment of a Star Trek episode here and there with my father, my true introduction was going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture with my grandparents—I was entranced,” said Guggenheim in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Almost all Trek stories are told from the point of view of the Enterprise crew, but I was interested in telling a story from the perspective of an outsider as a means of recapturing how it felt for me when I first saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”
IDW recently announced a crossover of two of its other Star Trek series (see “IDW to Launch Star Trek Crossover, ‘Day of Blood’”).
