Singer and writer Gil Scott-Heron, who died in 2011, is the elusive subject of a new graphic novel by documentarian Thomas Mauceri and artist Sebastien Piquet, to be published by Titan Comics in July 2023. The graphic novel follows Mauceri as he attempts to meet Scott-Heron for an interview that keeps getting postponed. Along the way, the filmmaker learns what inspired the musician who created The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and The Bottle, as well as the twists in his personal life, the culture of the times, and the legacy he left behind.
The graphic novel comes as musicians and the industry prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, dating the beginning of the genre to DJ Kool Herc’s performance at a block party in the Bronx on August 11, 1973. Events during the yearlong celebration include the opening of the Universal Hip Hop Museum in New York City, a documentary by rapper Nas’s company Mass Appeal, to be broadcast on Showtime, and a podcast series on iHeart Radio.
Titan also announced that it will publish the first volume of Michael Moorcock’s Multiverse in July (see “Titan to Publish Michael Moorcock’s ‘Multiverse’”).
