The winner of the seventh annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity was announced in a video hosted by Phil LaMarr. Adora and the Distance written by Marc Bernardin and with art by Ariela Kristantina was revealed as the latest winner.
Adora and the Distance was published originally as a comiXology Original and then in print by Dark Horse in 2022.
Adora and the Distance was inspired by Marc Bernardin’s daughter and is a YA fantasy graphic novel following the epic adventures of Adora, a brave young woman of color who lives in a fantastical world with underground pirates, ghosts, and a mysterious force called “The Distance” which threatens to destroy it all.
Other nominees included Himawari House, Swim Team, Nuclear Power, and Girl Haven. The selection committee included Marv Wolfman, Colleen Doran, Heidi MacDonald, Jamal Igle, Joseph Illidge, Kevin Rubio, Geoffrey Thorne, David F. Walker, Will J. Warkins, and Matt Wayne.
