‘Avatar’ Opens Big; Donald Glover Does ‘Spider-Man’ Universe; New ‘Superman’ Movie without Cavill, Who Goes to ‘Warhammer 40K’; ‘Across the Spider-verse’ Trailer; ‘Slime’ Gets Date; ‘Party & Prey’ Gets Legendary Deal; New Miyazaki Movie

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the Hollywood news is so delightful.  Got no place to go, so it’s time for a round up!

Avatar: The Way of Water opened to $134 million in its first weekend, with receipts driven by premium tickets for IMAX and 3D, according to Variety.  While that’s only the fifth best opening weekend of the year and somewhat below expectations, based on ticket pre-sales, day-over-day trends, and audience scores, the film is expected to have exceptional staying power; the first Avatar film held the top spot for seven consecutive weeks.  Another $301 million in international markets brought the film’s total take to $435 million in its first weekend.

Donald Glover is set to star in and produce a new Spider-Man villain movie by Sony Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The new Spider-man movie will revolve around an obscure villain, the Hypno-Hustler, who first appeared in Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #24 (1978).  Sony Pictures also recently announced a Silk: Spider Society series ordered by Amazon Studios (see “Marvel-Sony Shows“).

James Gunn penned a brand-new Superman film for his new DC Studios slate, according to Variety.  Gunn also stated that Henry Cavill will not be playing Superman in this movie, even after Cavill announced his return as Superman as he left the lead role of Geralt on Netflix’s The Witcher series (see “‘The Witcher’“).  This is yet another bold move made by the two new DC Studios Co-CEOs in an effort to remap the DC slate (see “‘No Gorilla Limits’“).

Fortunately for Cavill, Amazon Studios turned around and hired him to lead the cast of a Warhammer 40,000 series based on the popular miniatures game property from Games Workshop.  Cavill, a serious Warhammer fan himself, will executive produce and star in this series.  No word on the fate of the Warhammer 40,000:Eisenhorn live action series announced in 2019 from Games Workshop and Big Light Productions (see “‘Warhammer 40,000’ is Coming to the Small Screen“).

Sony Pictures Entertainment released a new trailer for Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse (see below).  This movie is slated to hit theaters on June 2, 2023 (see “2023“).

Studio Ghibli announced the Japanese release date for Hayao Miyazaki’s new feature film.  The new film is tentatively titled How Do You Live, and will open on July 14, 2023. Miyazaki’s last feature film was The Wind Rises, which was released in 2013 (see “Miyazaki Is Retiring“).

Crunchyroll announced U.S. release dates for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond (see “‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ Trailer“).  It will hit U.S. theaters on January 20, 2023.

AfterShock Media has teamed up with Legendary Entertainment to adapt Party & Prey for a feature film, the company announced.  Party & Prey is a horror/thriller graphic novel, created by Steve Orlando and Steve Foxe, which tells the story of a wealthy gay man who meets a younger man at a nightclub and their dark secrets.
