I do not know why I started dabbling in the 18th scale, because all it has done is make me spend even more money. Of course, I’ve been trying to be a little more frugal with my purchases, so it all evens out. In any case, Hiya Toys seems to be making a pretty good stab at filling out the Judge Dredd Universe, with quite a bit out or soon to be out. It has been a long time since I picked up the Legendary Comic Book Heroes Judge Death and Dredd, but here we are again, just a little smaller.
Going into a Judge Dredd line, you kind of have to expect the articulation to be a little troubled, because the Judges are about 90 percent shoulderpad, three percent elbow pad and three percent kneepad. That leaves 4 percent for the body. So yeah, my math checks out.
With that being said, these are still quite fun, you just have to work around the impedances in order to do things. The articulation itself—underneath all of that accessorizing—is pretty good. You get swivel hinge elbows on both of them, and double jointed knees. The hips are ball jointed, and there are peg-hinged ankles that allow you to get their feet more or less flat-footed in wide stances.
There’s a decent lateral spread for both of them, but you can’t get a full split. Judge Death has a ball jointed head, while Judge Dredd’s head and neck are a solid piece, with a ball at the bottom of the neck. He gets a ton of great range with that neck joint, allowing him to look up, down, tilt and pretty much anywhere he wants to look.
The hands are ball jointed. Judge Dredd has a ball jointed waist and upper torso, while Judge Death only has a ball jointed waist.
Judge Dredd’s forearms looked weird to me, and it took far too long for me to figure out that is forearms are swapped. After I finished taking pictures I heated up both arms and swapped them back around, and he’s fine now. I don’t know if this is the case with all of them, but it’s something to be aware of.
There’s nice sculpting across both of the figures, with some detailed badges and bats and bones and…all that stuff. There’s good cloth wrinkles in their uniforms, and the faces evoke the artwork almost perfectly. Judge death has that maniacal grin, and Judge Dredd has his stoic chinness, all ready to kick bad guy butt.
Judge Dredd comes with his pistol and a nightstick. He comes with a pair of relaxed hands, a trigger hands and a grabby hand.
Judge Death comes with a set of spooky hands, an even spookier hand, and a blood soaked grabby hand. That hand is perfect for holding the included heart, that fits nicely into his hand. Now I’m wondering why all of my toys don’t come with hearts. They both also come with a base.
For the pretty decent price of 20 dollars each, these are very cool little figures. They are, as I said, a little impeded by their designs, but it’s not a figure killer. I like them both quite a bit, and I’ll more than likely be grabbing all of the rest as they’re released. Apparently Hiya is doing Judge Dredd in the 6 inch scale as well, so I’m not sure if I’ll be grabbing those or just sticking with this scale.
