CMON has announced Fear of the Unknown, a follow-up to Cthulhu: Death May Die planned for December 2023.
Building on the original game, Cthulhu: Death May Die – Fear of the Unknown offers an entire new “season” composed of six new episodes and two Elder Boxes featuring Tsathoggua and Azathoth. As before, the players must work together to prevent a cult ritual and ultimately defeat the Elder One bent on consuming the world, while dealing with their own personal insanity.
This set is designed as a stand-alone expansion, so the original core set is not required to play. In addition to the new season, it also introduces new concepts to the game system including random monsters that can be added to any episode of any season and unknown relics that investigators can use to gain an advantage but at a cost to their sanity.
Fear of the Unknown comes with 46 unpainted plastic miniatures, 215 cards, 88 tokens, 1 storyboard, 1 unknown board, 10 investigator dashboards, 16 double-sided board tiles, 8 dice, 30 tentacle pawns, and 5 counter bases. It is intended for 1 to 5 players, ages 14 and up, and takes about an hour and a half to play. MSRP has not been announced.
The new material was designed by Rob Daviau and Marco Portugal (Project: ELITE, Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape) based on the original game created by Daviau and Eric M. Lang (see “Daviau and Lang Take on ‘Cthulhu’”). The original was released in 2020 along with four expansions (see “Daviau and Lang’s ‘Cthulhu’ Joined by Other Horrors”).
CMON is raising funds for the production of the game through a Kickstarter campaign that as of this writing has attracted 10,431 backers to pledge $918,303 (an average of $88.04 per backer). Backer fulfillment is scheduled for December 2023.
