VIZ Media’s announcements at New York Comic Con included a new manga by Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, a collection of stories based on the characters in the manga, and a Disney: Mirrorverse graphic novel.
Here’s a look at some of the new titles:
Goodbye Eri, by Fujimoto, is a one-shot manga about a young filmmaker whose mother asks him to record her final days. After her death, he is filled with despair and ready to commit suicide when he meets a young woman who brings him in a new direction, but who also holds an explosive secret. Viz has already published the manga digitally on its Shonen Jump platform; the print edition will go on sale on June 27, 2023, with an MSRP of $12.99.
Chainsaw Man: Buddy Stories, by Sakaku Hishikawa, is a collection of short prose stories about the side characters in the Chainsaw Man manga and is slated for release on July 25, 2023 with an MSRP of $10.99.
Disney Mirrorverse: Belle, by writer Alex Singer and artist Jan Apple, is set in the world of the Disney Mirrorverse mobile game, which is an alternate take on familiar Disney characters. The graphic novel will be a prequel to the game in which Belle goes on a journey to find the source of a curse that is afflicting her village. Release date for the graphic novel will be July 18, 2023, and the MSRP will be $14.99.
Akane-banashi, by writer Yuki Suenaga and artist Takamasa Moue, is set in the world of rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of storytelling, and follows a teenage girl who sets out to become a rakugo performer and avenge her father, who she feels was unfairly denied his opportunity to reach the top tier of his field. The series is ongoing and is three volumes long so far. This manga is being published digitally on the Shonen Jump app, and the print version of Vol. 1 is scheduled for release on August 8, 2023 with an MSRP of $9.99.
Until I Love Myself: The Journey of a Nonbinary Manga Artist, by Poppy Pesuyama, is the story of the author’s experience with sexual harassment in the workplace as well as their journey to self-acceptance. The first volume will be published on June 20, 2023 and will have an MSRP of $12.99.
Like a Butterfly, by Suu Morishita, is a high-school romance about a beautiful girl who is distant with most people but falls hard for the boy who rescues her from an unwanted admirer. Morishita is also the creator of another Viz title, Shortcake Cake, as well as A Sign of Affection, which is published by Kodansha (see “Manga News”). The first volume of Like a Butterfly is slated for release on July 4, 2023, with an MSRP of $9.99.
Wolf Girl and Black Prince, by Ayuko Hatta, is another shoujo high-school romance, this one about a girl who makes up a fake boyfriend so she won’t be the only one of her friends who is single. The catch is that the boy whose photo she uses goes to her school, and he agrees to pose as her boyfriend, but at a price. Hatta is the creator of Ima Koi: Now I’m in Love, another shoujo title that Viz launched earlier this year (see “New Manga from Viz”). The first volume of Wolf Girl and Black Prince will go on sale on May 9, 2023, with an MSRP of $9.99.
Dark Gathering, by Kenichi Kondo, stars a young man who seems to attract supernatural beings. After a perilous incident, he decides to avoid all things otherworldly and gets a job tutoring an elementary-school student, but as fate would have it, this young girl is a ghost-hunter who is on the trail of the spirit who took her mother. The first volume will go on sale on May 1, 2023, with an MSRP of $9.99.
Heart Gear, by Tsuyoshi Takaki, follows an android and a human girl as they wander a post-apocalyptic landscape looking for a safe haven for those they love. The first volume is scheduled for August 15, 2023, and will have an MSRP of $12.99.
