We’re back with more Boss Fight Hero H.A.C.K.S.! Today we are going to take a look at the classic comic book character, The Phantom and his horse, Hero!
The box has a nice huge window up front, so boxed collectors will have a great view of the figures and the back features a cool illustration and a good bit of background for those unfamiliar with the character.
The set comes with The Phantom, the Horse, Hero, two stands, two different sized supports for the horse stand, two extra hands, and two pistols. The standard Hero H.A.C.K.S. stand comes in black this time.
The horse stand has two different t-shaped supports that plug into the stand with a ball and socket connection. You can use these to help support the horse in different poses.
The guns are painted in a really nice metallic silver and have good detail for such tiny accessories. They fit well in the hands and the holsters. The pistol hands swap out with a little effort with fists that stay on securely. Both sets of hands feature The Phantom’s skull ring painted in that great silver.
Hero is based on the Hero H.A.C.K.S. Mighty Steed which has a great, classic horse sculpt, and has a detailed saddle and bridle that features The Phantom’s skull motif. The horse has really impressive articulation with a hinged neck that leads to a ball joint at the head and ball jointed lower neck and hips. There are also two swivel/hinge joints in the front legs and three in the back leg and one in the tail.
The Phantom has a very classic heroic build and his portrait captures that vintage comic book feel perfectly. He’s got nice articulation that moves well and features:
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Swivel waist and thighs
- Ball and socket neck and mid-torso
The paint is clean, but fairly minimal, with most of the parts cast in the correct plastic color. I especially like the silver pop on the skull belt. The Phantom is cast in a gray color that I don’t really associate with him, but a quick search of Phantom material shows that he had a variety of different purple shades over the years including this one in early books.
This set takes me back to my old Gabriel Toys Zorro and Lone Ranger horse and rider toys. I have to confess that I don’t know a lot about The Phantom. I vaguely remember Defenders of the Earth and the Billy Zane movie, but I’m not familiar with the comic strip, which is a little odd considering this sort of pulp fiction is right in my wheelhouse. A good figure will always get me to learn more about pop culture that I don’t know very well and this one definitely has me motivated to read more.
