DC will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Death of Superman event with a one-shot collecting four new stories by the original creators, each reflecting on a different aspect of the story. In addition, DC plans a deluxe edition of the original crossover event and a special new printing of Superman #75, the comic that included Superman’s fatal battle with Doomsday.
The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 will contain four new stories:
- “The Life of Superman” by writer and artist Dan Jurgens, artist Brett Breeding, colorist Brad Anderson, and letterer John Workman: Jon Kent is startled to learn of his father’s death in school, as his parents had never told him about it. While he’s dealing with that, he and Clark Kent must work together to fight a new villain, Doombreaker.
- “Standing Guard” by writer Roger Stern, artist Butch Guice, colorist Glenn Whitmore, and letterer Rob Leigh: The story of Superman’s battle with Doomsday told from the point of view of the Guardians.
- “Time” by writer Louise Simonson, artist Jon Bogdanove, colorist Glenn Whitmore, and letterer Rob Leigh: The death of Superman retold from the perspective of John Henry Irons.
- “Above and Beyond” by writer Jerry Ordway, penciler Tom Grummett, inker Doug Hazlewood, colorist Glenn Whitmore, and letterer Rob Leigh: Ma and Pa Kent watch Superman’s fateful battle on television, then leaf through their old photo albums, hoping that he will emerge triumphant in the end.
The 80-page comic will go on sale on November 8 with an MSRP of $10.99 and will have a main cover by Jurgens and Breeding, an open order variant by Jim Lee and Scott Williams, a Jon Kent variant by Dan Mora, a Funeral for a Friend variant by Ivan Reis and Danny Miki, a Doomsday die-cut and 1:25 Doomsday variant by Francesco Mattina, a 1:50 variant by Lee and Williams, a 1:100 foil variant by Jurgens and Breeding, and a premium polybag variant, featuring the main Jurgens/Breeding cover, that comes with an armband. The comic will also include nine pinups by artists including Jamal Campbell, Lee Weeks, Clay Mann, Fabio Moon, Walter Simonson, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Gabriel Rodriguez.
Also in the works is The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, which collects the entire crossover story, including Superman #73-75, Adventures of Superman #496-497, Justice League of America #69, Action Comics #683-684, Superman: The Man of Steel #17-19, Newstime: The Life and Death of Superman #1 and a bonus story, Superman: Day of Doom #1-4, the first time this story has been included in the collection. The 328-page hardcover will have a direct market exclusive variant cover by Jurgens and Breeding and will go on sale on December 6 with an MSRP of $39.99.
Superman #75 Special Edition is a new edition of the original comic in which Superman and Doomsday fought to the death; in addition to the story, it includes interviews with the creative team. The 32-page issue, with a cover by Jurgens and Breeding, will go on sale on November 1 with an MSRP of $3.99.
