SDCC 2022: Hilton Bayfront Strike Halted Late Wednesday

San Diego Comic-Con

As San Diego Comic-Con looked to start, a strike at the Hilton Bayfront loomed over the convention. The hotel is one of the major ones for the convention and a strike would be a potential major disruption.

Unite Here Local 30 which represents the hotel’s workers instructed the workers to cease picketing after it received what it regarded as a fair proposal. The details haven’t been released and won’t until workers vote on the new agreement.

While it’s not definitive, an individual implied the strike taking place during such an important week helped with the agreement.

The hotel is not only sold out but it also holds events for the convention in its Indigo Ballroom. The convention staffs tht room during panels.

The walkout initially began on Wednesday morning after talks stalled on Tuesday night. The hotel’s 600 unionized employees haven’t had a contract since November and signaled they’d strike last Friday.

Leaders of Unite Here, which represents more than 6,000 hotel, gaming and food service workers throughout the county.

Some services were unavailable at the hotel Wednesday while the workers striked.

The decision to strike was around two issues, pay and a hotel policy of not having housekeepers clean rooms daily. That became more common during the pandemic. The rooms are cleaned when guests check out unless requested. That reduced room attendant hours by 30 percent.

Hourly pay for non-tipped workers ranges from $19.30 to $20.65 and while it’s more than minimum wage, it’s still not enough to meet the area’s high cost of living.
