Jurassic World: Dominion continues to devour as Lightyear barely launches

Jurassic World: Dominion

It’s no surprise that Jurassic World: Dominion was once again atop the box office. The film earned an estimated $58.7 million lifting its domestic gross to $249.8 million. Over the week, the film also grossed $126.6 million at the international box office. There it has grossed $372.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $622.2 million after two weeks at the box office. Will it cross the billion mark like previous films? We’ll have to wait and see but it’ll be a fight to get there.

In second place was Lightyear which debuted with $51 million. Many on the culture war right are pointing to the amount as a rejection of “woke” Disney and the lack of Tim Allen. Allen has a show coming up on Disney+ and the film’s Buzz, voiced by Chris Evans, is a different Buzz than from Toy Story. The likely issue is, who is the film for? Those who grew up on Toy Story are adults now and kids have no connection to the character. Add in a new Jurassic Park and Top Gun and it’s a competition for nostalgia at theaters. It’s an odd choice for a theatrical release as a whole. Internationally, the film grossed $34.6 million to deliver a worldwide total of $85.6 million.

Top Gun: Maverick continues to the danger zone adding an estimated $44 million to its domestic total bringing that to $466.2 million. Over the week, the film also grossed $65.3 million internationally to bring that to $885.2 million.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came in fourth place earning $4.2 million and bringing its domestic total to $405.1 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $5 million internationally to bring that to $942.5 million. The film is inching towards $1 billion, will it cross the line?

Rounding out the top five was The Bob’s Burgers Movie an estimated $1.1 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $29.8 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $260,000 over the week to bring that to $2.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $31.8 million.

In comic film news…

Morbius is finally staked at the box office. The film’s domestic gross is $73.9 million. Internationally, the film remained steady with $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $163.9 million (about a trillion Morbinbucks).

The Batman looks like it remained steady domestically having earned $369.3 million. Internationally the film looks like it has ended its run and now stands at $401 million. The film currently stands at $770.3 million.

Initial numbers have 26 films earning $163,007,264 from 21,723 theaters. That’s a dip of about 25% from last weekend’s 51 films which earned $214,836,326 from 25,815 theaters. Still, it’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $7,503.90 this past weekend, slightly less than the previous weekend’s $8,322.15.
