Mile High Copy of ‘Superman #1’ Becomes the Most Expensive Comic Ever Sold

Certified Guaranty Company announced that the Edgar Church/Mile High 8.0 copy of Superman #1 (1939) changed hands in a private sale for $5.3 million back in January 2022.

The private sale was brokered by Tony Arnold of Tonye Trade Enterprises and Roy Delic of Vintage Comics with both the seller and buyer remaining anonymous. This CGC 8.0 copied is tied for highest graded copy of Superman #1 certified by CGC, and is part of Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree, which is an 18,000-book collection of pre-1955 comics in high grade condition (see “Last Mile High Comics“). The $5.3 million sale puts Superman #1 ahead of Amazing Fantasy #15 at $3.6 million (see “Marvel’s ‘Amazing Fantasy #15’ “), Action Comics #1 that sold on ComicConnect for $3.25 million, another Action Comics #1 that sold for $3.2 million in 2014  (see “The First $3 Million Dollar Comic!”), and the more recent sale of a CGC NM 9.4 Captain America Comics #1 from the San Francisco Pedigree at $3.12 million (see “‘Captain America Comics’ #1“).
