‘Magic: The Gathering’s’ Pro Tour Returns with Tabletop Events

Wizards of the Coast announced that Magic: The Gathering’s Pro Tour will make a return and feature FLGS tabletop events.

Over the past two years, tabletop Magic events have been on life support thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the much touted, newly-formed Player’s Tour was seemingly left for dead in favor of more digital events (see “Wizards of the Coast Announces Major Changes to Competitive Level ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Events“). Now, with the pandemic subsiding, WotC has gone to a slightly new version of an old model, the Pro Tour, which they had origianaly swept under the rug back in 2018 (see “WotC Launching Magic Pro League, Mythic Championships“) in favor of MagicFests and big money MTG Arena e-sports tournaments.

The new/old Pro Tour model has four levels of competition, beginning with Regional Championship Qualifiers that will be held at the FLGS level. Then, players that win those qualifiers get to duke it out in Regional Championship tournaments to qualify for the actual Pro Tour or the World Championship. The Pro Tour will feature the top players from each region battling each other in top level tournaments, which eventually lead the World Championships.

At the FLGS level, they will be giving out Lava Spike promo cards for local qualifiers with the top finishers receiving a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx promo. The Regional Championship promo card will be a Teferi, Hero of Dominaria promo.
