Wizards of the Coast Bans One Card in Two ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Formats

Wizards of the Coast updated their banned and restricted lists for Magic: The Gathering on March 7, 2022.

The new updates included the following moves:

  • Lurrus of the Dream-Den is banned in both the Modern and Pioneer formats.
  • Galvanic Relay and Disciple of the Vault are banned in the Pauper format.
  • Expedition Map is unbanned in the Pauper format.

Lurrus of the Dream-Den finally earned itself another double ban, almost two years after its almost immediate ban in Legacy and Vintage (see “Wizards of the Coast Bans“). Lurrus was later unbanned in Vintage (see “Eternal Formats“), after further review. Lurrus has been showing up in all kinds of decks, in the formats it was still legal in, including most notably “Hammer Time” and “Death’s Shadow” in Modern and “Artifact Aggro” in Pioneer. WotC eventually decided that there wasn’t a significant enough deck-building cost to using Lurrus in deck, and finally dropped the hammer on the card. Source: ICv2
