‘Peacemaker’ Soars into S2, Cena in ‘Coyote vs. Acme’, New ‘Power Rangers’ and ‘Transformers’, ‘LOTR’ Anime Date Set, New ‘Star Trek’ Feature Planned, ‘Wonder Twins’ in the Works

A blizzard of showbiz news has blown across the land, and it’s time for a round-up!

HBO Max has renewed Peacemaker for a second season.  Executive producer James Gunn announced the renewal on his Twitter feed (see below).  Peacemaker S1 premiered on January 13, 2022 (see “‘Peacemaker’“) and starred John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Robert Patrick, and Peacemaker’s pet eagle, Eaglee.

Cena is also set to star in Warner Bros.’ Coyote Vs. Acme, according to Deadline.  The live-action/animated hybrid will be directed by Dave Green, and written by Samy Burch based on the New Yorker article Coyote vs. Acme by Ian Frazer and the Looney Tunes characters.   The film has been in development since 2018 (see “Wile E. Coyote Sues Acme“), but now has a new script and producers.

Hasbro will launch new Power Rangers and Transformers programming this year, the company announced.  The first 11 episodes of the second season of Power Rangers Dino Fury, the first show produced by Hasbro’s recently acquired eOne, will drop on Netflix (moving from Nickelodeon) on March 3.  And Transformer Earthspark, the new animated series from eOne and Nickelodeon will launch globally this fall.  It will feature the first Transformers born on earth.

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation will release The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, a new anime feature set about 200 years before the events in The Hobbit, on April 12, 2024, according to Variety.  It will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Joseph Chou (both of Blade Runner: Black Lotus) through his anime studio Sola Entertainment.  While the anime shares some creative DNA with the New Line releases by Peter Jackson, there’s no connection between this film and the live-action series from Prime Video (see “’LOTR Trailer“).

Chris Pine and company will boldly go back to the silver screen; Brian Robbins and J.J. Abrams announced that they will be making another Star Trek movie for Paramount, according to Variety.  Paramount is currently in negotiations with stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise’s command deck. Star Trek 4 was previously put on hiatus after these stars refused to bow to Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media’s proposed budget cuts (see “‘Star Trek 4’ Stars Balk at Pay Cuts“).

Warner Bros. is developing a Wonder Twins live-action movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  This movie, which will be based on the comic book of the same title (see “A Visit With Wonder Comics“), will be written and directed by Adam Sztykiel, and produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.  The Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna, had previously appeared on-screen in the 70s animated The All-New Super Friends Hour series, in guest appearances on Teen Titans, and in Smallville.
