First Look: Talia al Ghul Shows Her True Colors

For as much as the mysterious and technologically powerful organization known as Leviathan has shaken up the DC Universe, there’s a lot we don’t know about what they ultimately want. They believe they represent a better path forward than the cycle of espionage and open warfare perpetuated by the covert organizations they dismantled—groups like ARGUS, the DEO, KOBRA, SPYRAL and more. Yet, what that path actually is remains clouded in mystery. The one thing we do know is that it seems to be dependent on disrupting the Heroes Network—the high-tech network that the Justice League uses to communicate with the superheroes of the world. That means Leviathan must infiltrate none other than the Hall of Justice, one of the most secure and protected buildings in the universe. For Checkmate to have any hope of stopping them, they must do the same. And no matter which side is ultimately successful in their goal, the Justice League is probably not going to be very happy them.

No one ever said the life of a covert agent was easy.

In last month’s Checkmate #5, both groups succeed in getting into the Hall and waste no time getting to work. Unfortunately, that’s where the smooth sailing ends for them. The power suddenly shuts off throughout the Hall of Justice—the first time that’s ever happened—and even worse, it becomes clear that one of Checkmate’s members is playing both sides. Talia al Ghul, who was always seen as the team’s wildcard, shoots her teammates with an electronic stun gun, determined to take control of the Heroes Network herself. Can any of the agents of Checkmate shake off the stun quickly enough to stop her? And even if they do, what are they going to do about Leviathan, who managed to sneak one of their agents into the Hall of Justice’s intern program?

See what goes down in our exclusive sneak peek at next week’s Checkmate #6, and be sure to grab the full issue on Tuesday for the mind-shattering climax of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s techno-mystery—featuring a dramatic twist that promises to shed some real light on who will soon be controlling things from the shadows.

Checkmate #6 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev and Lee Loughridge is available in print and as a digital comic book on Tuesday, November 23.
