Almost 5,000 Comics and Pulp Magazines Stolen from University Collection

A total of 4,996 items, from Action Comics to Zap Comix, have been stolen from the Robert M. Ervin Jr. collection of the Florida State University Libraries, according to a statement by Katie McCormick, Associate Dean of FSU Special Collections & Archives. The missing items include comics from Marvel, DC, and other publishers; underground comics; science fiction, fantasy, and horror magazines; Big Little Books; books and magazines about comics collecting and criticism; and posters and prints of comics art. The bulk of the items date from the 1950s to the 1970s; the collection was created between 1920 and 1978.

The items went missing between March 17, 2020, and February 10, 2021, and some may have been offered for sale as early as March 2020. Most of the items do not have any marks that would identify them as property of FSU, although some may have mailing labels for addresses in Tallahassee, Florida. A spreadsheet of the missing items can be downloaded from The New Antiquarian, which reported on the theft. Anyone with information about this theft should reach out to the FSU Special Collections & Archives
