I’m not really an Age of Apocalypse fan, so I feel okay skipping those Marvel Legends waves, but I do have fond memories of the bizarro adventures with Legion in the original New Mutants book, so I did pre-order this figure from Target. Thankfully they didn’t do that weird thing where they cancel a pre-order because I didn’t tell them enough times that I still want it and he shipped earlier than expected. Let’s take a look at Legion!
Legion comes in the standard box and sports some pretty crazy artwork on the sides and back that feels appropriate for the character. He comes with two fists, two open hands, and a BAF part of AoA Colossus.
The fists feel like a bit of an odd choice for me as I tend to think of Legion as going from comatose to wildly wielding his powers, not really getting into punch-ups. I was thinking maybe a translucent orange hand might have been cool to show a power effect or even better would be a wilder, more Sienkevich-style portrait.
Sculpting is good with a relatively slim new torso added to the Shang-Chi legs. It works well for a buffer, more Kubert style Legion which makes a lot of sense this being an AoA themed wave. He’s definitely way thicker than I think of David Haller, but Legends doesn’t ever really get into a artist specific style, so I can accept this as Legion in their house style. The hair is pretty magnificent.
The articulation is typical Marvel Legends except his neck is a barbell ball and socket instead of the ball on top of a hinge that gets some great tilt action. I do wish they had given him some pectoral butterfly hinges and a mid-torso wobble so he could go a little more wild in posing, but it’s otherwise good with:
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and calves (under the pants sleeves)
- Double hinged knees and elbows
- Ab crunch
The paint is interesting in that they put some large chunks of darker blue on the figure to add a little depth to the plain outfit and it gives it an almost cel-shaded feel. Otherwise Legion is mostly plain plastic. The blue is a nice Fwoosh Blue for everybody out there interested in making Fwoosh-themed customs.
Overall Legion is a solid addition to the New Mutants section of the X-Shelf. He does make me want to fill out that section more with a Canonball, Cypher, Magik, Magma, and Sunspot from that era.
