Star Spangled War Stories v1 #140 featuring Enemy Ace, 1968 – Taken prisoner by the Hangman, Enemy Ace recuperates at a French estate before his transfer to a prisoner of war camp. On the opening splash, Joe Kubert’s somber portrait of the ace leads into a two-page spread of an enormous dirigible. The subsequent air battle and approaching thunderstorm is skillfully drawn. The story’s artistic high point occurs soon afterward, depicting the two main characters atop the downed wreckage (page 9). Kubert delivers another terrific effort. This is #40 of 96 Star Spangled War issues by Kubert (sans reprints).
